Judges Report – Heidi Rolfes Maltese Club Championship Show 16.9.2017

MALTESE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER 2017 Judge: Dr Heidi Rolfes (Wampum Maltese)

It was a wonderful experience for me to judge my own breed at the UK Maltese Club championship show. I have judged Maltese on 5 continents (and seen them on more) so I’d like to share my overall impressions with you. In general, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound rears on all the dogs, their good bites and their friendly and outgoing temperaments. The UK has always been known for the coat quality in their kennels and I was not disappointed, although this is such an important part of our breed standard that we should always guard this breed type characteristic! In general, eyes were dark which gives our breed their soft expression. My winners were dogs of outstanding merit! The standard also asks for proud head carriage, and thus shoulder layback and return of upper arm is a very important requirement in our breed. In my opinion, and from what I have seen in my life, this is the most difficult part of the Maltese to get right when we breed because upright shoulders are dominant over well laid back shoulders, just like crimped and curly coats are dominant over straight long silky coats. Thank you to the club for their hospitality and to all the exhibitors for their entries.

Class 4 JD (1 Entry) Abs: 0
1st: 27 LLES & HOLLAND, Mrs C & Mrs N Sarasuma Eternity Marc at Lafford. A dog with a lovely texture silky coat. For balance I would have preferred a slightly shorter muzzle on him but he had a good dark eye. His topline was level but his front action was a little high.

Class 5 MD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 12 GILLIES, Mrs CR Delcost Stinger. Also 1st in MPD and 2nd in PD.
2nd: 44 URQUHART, Mr G & Mrs C Blackpark Bobby Dazzler. A small dog with good angulation, dark eyes and lovely dark pigment. His coat was a little on the fine side but straight and silky. I just preferred the smoother movement and the spring of rib on the winner.

Class 6 ND (1 Entry) Abs: 0

Class 7 GD (1 Entry) Abs: 0

Class 8 PGD (1 Entry) Abs: 0
1st: 16 HOLLAND, Ms N & LEES, Mrs C Unique White Star of Eternity at Sarasuma. A well boned dog with a good spring of rib. His tail set was a little too low and his coat appeared slightly woolly. What a showman!

Class 9 LD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 8 FLANNIGAN, Miss S & DORNAN & JACKSON, Mrs A & Miss S Benatone Signor Jackson. A quality dog with good pigment, a beautiful silk coat, a level topline and super true front action.
2nd: 28 LEES, Mrs C & WELBOURN, Miss N Zumarnik Collaboration with Lafford. A smaller dog than the winner, quite fine boned and elegant. I would have liked a little more spring of rib on him.
3rd: 35 PEARSON, Miss Y Vontesse Chimaera George. He had a lovely dark eye. I would have liked his back a little shorter for balance and also, his muzzle was a little long. He was slightly cow hocked.

Class 10 OD (7 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 52 WELBOURN, Miss N Ch Zumarnik Stars N Stripes. A once-in-a-lifetime dog! He has the most magnificent proportions and attractive head with dark eyes, pitch black pigment and a heavy silk coat. What creates an even more pleasing picture of balance is his lovely high tail set with the tail falling over to the side as required in the breed standard. What a great mover with such proud head carriage. He was Dog CC winner and my Best in Show.
2nd: 20 JACKSON, Miss S & ARMSTRONG, Mrs P Ch(USA) Hi-Lite Gold Charlock. Another dog of great quality with a lovely silk coat and excellent topline. His head was very attractive too. If I had to criticise him, I would say his front action was perhaps a little close and he showed slight white in the inner corners of the eyes. He was by Reserve Dog CC winner.
3rd: 9 GILLIES, Mrs CR Ch(USA) Delcost Beyond Infinity. A smaller and finer dog than my winner and my second place, but still beautifully proportioned and true on the move with a level topline. He had lovely dark pigment and a very attractive head. I just preferred the substance, rib and power of my winner and my second place.

Very typey. 2nd: 7 FLANNIGAN, Miss S & DORNAN, Mrs A Snowkai’s Killer Frost. A bitch with a lovely silk coat. I do like a looser tail but I’d say her’s should come over more as her coat grows.

1st: 21 JACKSON, Miss S & RYCRAFT, Mrs H & Mr D Benatone Paris with Love at Hevundug. A well-boned solid bitch with good spring of rib and a very good forequarter. I would have liked a slighty silkier coat on her. She moved with reach and drive and held her topline well.
2nd: 25 JONUSAITE, Miss D Romantic Show Ledi for Emperatrice. Higher on the leg as my winner with a narrow forequarter and slight white showing in the eyes. Good heavy silk coat.
3rd: 32 PEARCE, Miss M Bubbleup All that Glitters. Plainer in the head than my first and second place but balanced in outline. She needs some show ring training and a little work on her stained face.
Res: 31 OLIVER, Ms G Cannon Islay Princess.

Class 16 NB (1 Entry) Abs: 0
1st: 41 RYCRAFT, Mrs HA & Mr DJ Hevundug Tula My Dream Girl. A friendly bitch but she carried her head a little low and her topline was not exactly level. Her nose leather pigment could have been deeper too.

Class 17 GB (5 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 5 FLANNIGAN, Miss S & DORNAN, Mrs A Snowkai’s Diamond in the Sky. This beautiful bitch obviously did not like showing indoors at all. She had lovely dark pigment and an excellent silk coat. Loved her profile on the stack and she was really sound.
2nd: 39 RYCRAFT, Mrs HA & Mr DJ Hevundug Miss Attitude. She had a good profile but her coat could have been silkier and her nose leather better pigmented. I also would have liked a slightly darker eye on her.
3rd: 41 RYCRAFT, Mrs HA & Mr DJ Hevundug Tula My Dream Girl. This friendly little girl could have had better shoulder layback and a slightly cobbier body. Her topline was level but she also lacked a bit of pigment on her nose.

Class 19 LB (43 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 51 WELBOURN, Miss N Zumarnik Sinatra. An elegant bitch with a lovely proportioned head. She had a super tail set, up and over and a pleasing outline with a smooth action. I would have liked better halos on her and slightly tighter elbows.
2nd: 45 URQUHART, Mr G & Mrs C Blackpark Diamond. A well pigmented bitch with a very pretty head and dark eyes. Her topline was higher at the bum and she could have had better shoulder layback.
3rd: 30 LIDDELL, Miss WC Snowkai’s Truly Madly Deeply. I would have liked a better shoulder layback on this bitch too and she also had a slightly too low tail set spoiling the outline. Also VHC in GB.

Class 20 OB (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 10 GILLIES, Mrs CR Ch(USA) Delcost Hot Chocolate. A small but super elegant bitch with a beautiful outline and lovely proud head carriage and good stride side on. Overall very well angulated with a true and clean front action. Her head was very attractive with lovely dark pigment and a soft expression. I also loved her true silk coat. She was my Bitch CC winner, Reserve Best in Show and Best Opposite Sex in Show. A well-deserved CC!! The first of many.
2nd: 22 JACKSON, Miss S & JACKSON, Mrs R Ch Benatone Kinky Boots. Another bitch of great quality. She had a lovely outline, good carriage, nicely angulated fore and aft and she moved with ease. I preferred the nose leather pigment and halos on my winner. Also my Reserve Bitch CC winner. Well deserved.

Class 21 SBB (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 31 OLIVER, Ms G Cannon Islay Princess. A small bitch with slightly too small eyes. She could have had better shoulder layback and angulation overall as her back appeared a little too long and her stride was short. Also Res in GB.

22 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 39 and 41, RYCRAFT, Mrs HA & Mr DJ Hevundug Miss Attitude and Hevundug Tula My Dream Girl.
